The first thing to mention is that this new SL is a 2+2 layout, the first since the R129 was discontinued in 1989. Mercedes claims that people up to 4 feet 11 inches tall can fit in the back seats, but legroom is extremely limited—consider using this extra space to carry luggage or shopping. As you'd expect from a modern Mercedes, there's plenty of digital space on the inside, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster integrated into an aviation-themed dashboard layout. Anyone who has seen the interior of the most recent S-Class will recognize the nearly square, 11.9-inch touchscreen in the center stack. This screen can be adjusted vertically between 12 and 32 degrees in order to reduce glare when the new SL's soft top is down. All 2022 Mercedes-AMG SLs will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter M177 AMG V-8. The SL55 will be the "entry-level" car, with 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, while the SL63 will have 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The difference is primarily due to the SL63's increased turbo-boost pressure and improved internal airflow, as well as modified engine software. Future SL models for global markets will be powered by AMG's 2.0-liter turbo M139 engine, which currently produces 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in other applications. Mercedes-AMG also promises a high-performance plug-in hybrid model. Despite adding rear seats and gaining a few pounds, the new R232 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL appears to be the best-performing SL model in history. But we're more curious to see if all of the electronics and traction-enhancing all-wheel-drive hardware can deliver those big performance numbers while also providing a satisfying driving experience.

Each side of the rear suspension has its own electromechanical steering actuator that applies up to 2.5 degrees of rear steering. Turning opposite the front wheels reduces the turning-circle diameter from 43.0 to 40.4 feet, while steering the rears in the same direction as the fronts increase stability at higher speeds. Vehicles equipped with this system have a lower, more direct steering ratio of 12.8:1, compared to 14.2:1 without it.
