FIRST DRIVE of the Confusing “Pro” model from #AMG’s new GT Series! Welcome back to RBR, we’re at Acari race track in Spain, and I’m trying to get my head around why this particular variant of the GT63 exists.
On the face of it, it seems like an “S” model, and one less focused on track than the old #AMGGT R Pro was. But there are plenty of changes, like more power at 612HP, optimised aero paired to a whole new cooling strategy.
A big focus is on cooling brakes, the engine and the diff, in order to extract more power specifically on track. Which is then why the more aggressive and open front exists. We have some aero increasing downforce on both front and rear by 30 and 15 kg respectively. The brakes are new optimised hardware, and the diff is more open and water cooled. And finally, Michelin cup 2 R tyres as a no cost option.
And it’s doing the job, #MercedesAMG managed an unofficial ring time that matches the previous “GT3” competitor, the AMG GT R! AMG’s engineers say it’s a car for the daily GT customer, who also wants to extract the most out of their car on track occasionally, without hindering its usability, namely:
- You can spec 2+2 seats
- Semi active AMG suspension is standard
- Interior is not compromised in any way
- AMG bucket seats standard
- Aero package and carbon standard
Is it just an unnecessary variant, or a useful arrow in the quiver of the AMG customer? Let’s find out today!
