Remember the original AMG GT Coupe? It went through a major evolution over the years with the GT S, GT R, and the beastly GT Black Series. Now, the second-generation AMG GT is starting its own journey to greatness. AMG's been busy, and we've got the scoop on the brand-new AMG GT Pro, just unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K.
From the early GT models to the ferocious GT Black Series, each iteration has been sharper, faster, and more exhilarating. Now, with the second generation, AMG is pushing the boundaries even further. The recently announced 805-hp plug-in hybrid GT63 S E is set to top the range, but today, our focus is on the GT Pro, the track-focused marvel.
The changes to the GT63 Pro might seem subtle individually, but together, they create a significant performance boost on the track. Power has been cranked up, cooling systems are upgraded, and carbon-ceramic brakes come standard. Plus, track-biased tires are available at no extra cost.
The heart of this beast, AMG's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, has shown remarkable versatility over the years. Whether it's 450 or 750 horsepower, cross-plane or flat-plane crank, this engine delivers. For the GT63 Pro, we're looking at the cross-plane variant with a modest bump, hitting 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. And yes, it still boasts the 4Matic all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic gearbox with a wet clutch replacing the torque converter.
AMG claims a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.1 seconds remains unchanged from the regular GT63. However, from zero to 124 mph, the Pro shaves off half a second, clocking in at an impressive 10.9 seconds. That's blisteringly fast!
To keep things cool, the GT Pro comes with double high-temperature radiators up front, separate rads for the front and rear differentials, and an actively cooled electronically controlled transfer case. Airflow enhancements include larger side intakes in the front bumper to channel air to the brakes efficiently.
Aerodynamics are taken to the next level with a fixed rear wing in naked carbon fiber and additional air deflectors beneath the car. These modifications result in 66 pounds less aerodynamic lift at the front and 33 pounds more downforce at the rear. Plus, those sleek 21-inch forged alloy wheels come standard, with tire options including Michelin Pilot Sport 5 or track-focused Pilot Sport Cup 2 R rubber.
