1997 Mercedes Benz S320 (W140/V140) Long Wheel Base (LWB) In Depth Tour, Review, Walkaround, and Test Drive
In the late 1970s, Mercedes Benz released their 2nd generation S Class, the W126 body which was such a big hit that they sold it all the way from 1979 to 1990. Improving on an already near perfect design takes a huge engineering marvel. To achieve such monumental tasks, Mercedes Benz spent over 1 Billion US Dollars in 1980s money into the R&D of the best Mercedes Benz S Class ever made, the W140 S Class.
Sporting numerous mind-boggling features such as CAN BUS technology which was literally unheard of in cars at that time, double paned glass, self retracting trunk handle, rear vanity mirrors, side airbags, electrically operated centre rear view mirror, 722.6 5 speed electronic transmission, optional air suspension, a magic carpet ride, and most importantly an optional 6.0L V12 engine, it was beyond compare for the 7 Series E38.
You could get the W140 in 3 wheelbase forms. A short wheelbase W140 (280SE/S280, 300SE/S320, 400SE/S420, 500SE/S500, and really rare 600SE/S600), a long wheelbase V140 (300SEL/S320, 400SEL/S420, 500SEL/S500, and 600SEL/S600), and the coupe C140 later known as the CL Class. Engines ranged from the base model 2.8L I6 M104 engine with 193PS, all the way to the massive 6.0L V12 M120 with 410PS.
This review is on my post-facelift 1997 V140 S320 long wheelbase with a 3.2L M104 I6 engine developing 230PS, and 315Nm torque which is while not fast, is nowhere close to the definition of underpowered.
