Under the vehicle naming scheme maintained by Mercedes-Benz, SUVs make use of the base name "GL", accompanied by the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy. The "G" is made for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle) and alludes the long-running G-Wagen. This is and then the letter "L" that provides linkage using the letter "C"—the GLC being the SUV similar to the C-Class. The GLC, like its predecessor, began assembly at Mercedes-Benz's plant in Bremen, Germany. Since the principle GLC production site in Bremen already runs at full capacity, Mercedes-Benz decided to expand the assembly capacity by means of Valmet Automotive plant at Uusikaupunki, Finland. The manufacturing with the GLC were only available in Finland during Q1 of 2017.
