Mercedes w163 ABS Wheel Speed Sensors / VSS choose correct ones for VIN # or Limp mode will result

Hello w163 - Mercedes ML Owners:
Our ML's have two series of ABS Wheel Speed Sensors (AKA VSS - vehicle speed sensors)


Which type is determined by your VIN - chassis #.
Chassis Split is at A371935 - if your Chassis is After that, you require sensors for 2003-2005 ML

if your Chassis is Before that, you require sensors for the 1998-2002 ML models.


They look mostly the same & fit the same BUT don't work electrically the same - late sensors in early chassis ML's won't register ANY wheel speed & your ML will be in LIMP Mode - limited to 1-2 gear & about 25 mph.


My ML was idled for about 3 months while I sorted all this out. So this is posted as a 'Friendly Warning' to others to avoid this "dumb" error.
