Vehicle concept
The entirely new control and display concept devel-
oped for model series 221 is also used in model series
216. The primary concerns are in the fields of ergo-
nomics, ease of operation and safety. In spite of the
large number of functions in the vehicle, the
complexity of operating them remains as low as
possible.
The following goals were pursued and implemented:
• Minimizing the complexity of operating the various
vehicle functions
• Increasing comfort, operating safety and stress-
reducing safety
• Direct access to frequently used functions via
switches and function keys
• Grouping of related functions in separate control
islands
• Ergonomic positioning of switches where the
action takes place
Innovations
• Night View Assist
• Electric parking brake
• "DIRECT SELECT" shift with control on the steering
column module and steering wheel shift buttons
• DORSTOP variable door stopping
• New control and display concept with central
control button

dynamic curve illumination, motorway light,
cornering illumination and extended fog light
function

Dimensional concept
The new dimensional concept of the new CL-Class
offers:
• Generous internal dimensions front and rear
• Good visibility
• Improved access thanks to a larger maximum door
opening angle
Front view
The new CL-Class is characterized by:
• The striking, stretched hood surface with central
kink
• A steeper and wider radiator orifice with 3 slats
instead of the previous 4
• Clear, flat headlamp contours
With its more pronounced taper and accentuated
width, the front end makes an even more impressive
and commanding impression than its predecessor.
The headlamps are designed with clear glass lenses
and with a matching turn signal strip across the entire
width of the lamp at the bottom.
Rear view
The rear of the new CL-Class looks to be tightly drawn
in and sets new standards in the overall appearance of
the car with its bulging side surfaces and striking lines.
The rear lamps are drawn far forward, making the rear
end appear shorter and thereby creating an extremely
sporty appearance. In addition, the specially shaped
lenses of the rear lamps continue the side lines of the
vehicle and carry them elegantly on to the tip of the
rear end.
The rear view is dominated by the characteristic
Mercedes V-shaped lines of the trunk lid and the
powerful bumper. The sporty and forceful rear end is
rounded off by two cutouts in the bumper for the
exhaust end pipes.
