Testing For A Bad Crankshaft Position Sensor - Basic & In-Depth Testing (Detailed Explanation)

Learn how to diagnose a faulty or failing crankshaft position sensor (CKP) on your vehicle. I will perform and show you some basic and in-depth troubleshooting in this video and explain how these sensors work.

As the crankshaft in the engine spins there is a reluctor wheel with teeth that is typically mounted behind the crank pulley which is behind the timing cover with either a timing chain or timing belt type engine. The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) typically monitors the speed of the crankshaft and tells the computer what position the engine is in relative to the reluctor wheel. Now, although not discussed in this video the camshaft position sensor is also taken into account to determine the relative position of which the engine is in. This information is then transmitted to the engine computer in which it determines when and how to fire the ignition system such as to fire the spark plugs and how much fuel the vehicle needs and so on. This is the critical information that an engine needs in order to produce proper and accurate timing of the engine and components. Without this sensor (CKP) the engine will not start/run.
