the 2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 now costs nearly 50% more than it did four years ago, despite having few additional features.
Customers in Australia, however, are still unable to order one because Mercedes has ceased accepting deposits until it has completed its current two-year waiting list.
Mercedes-Benz Australia is expected to "price protect" customers who previously placed orders at lower RRPs. However, when new orders are placed, buyers will be asked to pay top dollar.
The Mercedes-AMG G63 for Model Year 2023 has received a $51,003 price increase, raising its recommended retail price (RRP) from $247,700 to $365,900 plus on-road costs today.
The G63 4*4 is where Mercedes-traditional Benz's off-roader abandons all pretense and heads straight for the extreme.
The new super-SUV was created by a dedicated team of G-Class engineers in close collaboration with their colleagues from the Mercedes-AMG performance car division, and its traditional military-grade appearance, powerful V8 petrol engine, trick portal axles, and massive
This successor to the Mercedes G500 4*4 is based on the latest Mercedes G63 4Matic, which is also manufactured at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. According to Emmerich Schiller, CEO of Mercedes-newly Benz's formed G-Class sub-brand, it exists due to the unexpectedly high demand for its predecessor, which debuted in 2015.
Whether you like it or not, there's no denying the visual impact of the big off-roader.
In appearance, it resembles a monster truck as much as the standard G63 4Matic. Carbonfibre is used in the wheel-arch extensions, spare wheel cover, along the wings and doors, and in the roof-mounted spoiler above the windscreen. Optional roof racks with their own distinctively styled roof spoiler, integrated LED driving lights, and a load rating of up to 90kg, as well as a rear-mounted ladder, are available to buyers.
The G63 4*4 retains the traditional body-on-frame construction of the G500 4*4, but everything else is new, as with the latest G63 4Matic. Much of the ladder frame is now made of hot-formed high-strength steel and aluminum. Despite growing moderately in size, the curb weight is actually 131kg less than its predecessor's, at 2865kg. Torsional stiffness is said to have improved by 55%.
Underneath, the former rigid-axle front suspension gives way to a new double-wishbone arrangement, which provides more wheel articulation than before, as seen on the G63 4Matic. The rear axle is held rigid by four separate links on each side and a Panhard rod. The G500 4*4 's twin-tube dampers are being replaced by new single-tube dampers.
The use of portal axles results in a 113mm increase in ground clearance over the G63 4Matic to 351mm, which was originally inspired by the development of the even more extreme G63 6 launched in 2013. They were designed specifically for the G63 4 and use sturdy-looking gearsets at each end to offset the axle center line and raise the chassis and body. The increased rolling radius of the tires also contributes to the increased clearance.
As a result, the fording depth is increased by 210mm over the G63 4Matic, which appears rather tame when parked next to the G63 44.
