Only diesel to start (and an AMG version).
Four years ago, on July 2015, the Mercedes GLE Coupe landed. Today, a new generation based on the second generation of GLE is on the agenda. Only six-cylinder diesel engines, the 350d and the 400d, are available for its debut. As for the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4Matic + Coupé, it has the only gasoline engine available at the moment. A hybrid plug-in version will follow. The car will debut at IAA Frankfurt (12-22 September 2019). The arrival in concessions is scheduled for spring 2020.
With its 4.94 meters long, the new GLE Coupe exceeds its eldest by four centimeters. The wheelbase has also increased by two centimeters, but it remains six centimeters shorter than the GLE, allowing a more sporty behavior, according to Mercedes. At the front, the new version is also equipped with the famous "diamond grille" in Mercedes language, crossed by a single horizontal strip. In addition, there is underrun protection. In the AMG range, the grid widens downwards in the shape of A, the axes of the diamond grille are chrome-plated. The projectors are equipped with LED technology as standard. The flatter windshield reduces drag by 9% compared to its predecessor while maintaining the same frontal area. The wheel arches are body-colored in AMG version, and black plastic standard, and emphasize the large wheels (from 19 to 22 inches).
As shown by our comparison with its elder (in white), the horizontal chrome strip at the back disappears. The taillights are always divided into two, the license plate still located in the bumper. Underneath, there is a chrome underbody protection integrating the cannulas of exhaust outlets.
In the cockpit, we find what we know of the latest Mercedes, including the GLE, with two large screens (12.3 inches each). The instrument panel is divided horizontally: the upper part is black, the lower part can be chosen in the trim of your choice. For the SUV, the center console has two handles.
The trunk can accommodate from 655 to 1790 liters of luggage, this maximum volume increasing by 70 liters compared to before. The rear seat can be folded in a ratio of 40:20:40. The loading surface is thus raised to more than two meters by one meter, which represents a significant improvement over its predecessor. The loading threshold is also six centimeters lower than before. And if you opt for the optional air suspension, the rear can be lowered another five inches at the touch of a button.
Voice control is standard onboard. In the course of the year 2020, Mercedes will also integrate the music streaming service Amazon Music. Amazon Prime members can then choose between two million titles and transfer the selected music to the car.
Previously, in addition to the AMG versions (GLE 43 and GLE 63), there was also a gasoline engine (GLE 400 with 333 hp) and a 350 d with 258 hp. For this new generation, the range of engines does not include, for now, not to mention the AMG version GLE 53).
Other engines, like the 245 hp 300 d and the 389 hp 450 gasoline, will probably follow. Thanks to the SCR system, both launch versions meet the Euro 6d standard. They are equipped with a 9G Tronic automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive based on an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch. This makes it possible to vary the drive torque from 0 to 100% (torque on request) between the axles, which increases agility and dynamism.
The new GLE Coupé is equipped as standard with a spring suspension steel supposed to be more waterproof than its predecessor. As an option, the Airmatic air suspension is available in a sporty configuration and with adaptive dampers. The E-Active Body Control suspension is also available as an option and allows you to individually adjust the spring and damper forces of each wheel. This not only helps to counter roll movements but also pitching and lifting movements. With the Road Surface Scan and the Curve feature, the system is considered the most intelligent SUV chassis in the world, according to Mercedes. E-Active Body Control works with a voltage of 48 Volts and can even recover electrical energy on bad roads.
Many driver assistance systems are standard, such as collision avoidance, which also prevents collisions with pedestrians and vehicles crossing the road. As an option, a remote control responds to real-time traffic jam information and, as a precautionary measure, reduces speed to around 100 km / h in the event of traffic jams in front.
