The daring red GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo from Volkswagen will make its first public debut this weekend at the Volkstravaganza in Wörthersee, Austria. VW has published these lovely, incredibly accurate representations and a wealth of information for the brand's devoted fans who can't attend, going above and beyond what was revealed when conceptual sketches were leaked last week.
Recap: The 2013 Wörthersee star of VW, the Design Vision GTI, is the foundation for the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo concept. The chopped-top GTI was initially developed as a wholly virtual car for Gran Turismo 6 on the Sony PS3. But VW decided to make this one a reality, much as Mercedes-Benz did with its highly ambitious Vision Gran Turismo sports-car concept, which stole the show at the L.A. auto show last year.
The style is a definite progression of the Design Vision GTI's with its menacing grin and expanded body, and this one adds a very wicked basket-handle C-pillar and enormous rear spoiler. We appreciate the spoiler's angled struts even though it may be pure video game whimsy. The GTI Roadster, in contrast to the Design Vision GTI, has scissor doors, a cut windscreen, and obviously no roof. However, similar to its forerunner, it is driven by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter VR6 engine that utilizes a seven-speed DSG to distribute 503 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. According to Volkswagen, the vehicle weighs 3133 pounds, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 192 mph.
The wheelbase of the GTI Roadster, which is 103.6 inches, is shorter than that of the Design Vision GTI and the production model, both of which have longer wheelbases. The car is 42.9 inches tall, 74.6 inches wide, and overall measures 163.7 inches—about four inches less than a standard GTI. Gran Turismo Red is the appropriately named spin on the well-known Tornado Red color, according to VW, while the majority of the trim is made of matte-finish carbon fiber. Only the grille and the mesh for the hood vent are gloss black. The front and rear brake rotors measure 15.0 inches and 14.0 inches, respectively, and are mounted on 20-inch center-lock wheels with 235/35 and 275/30 tires.
A carbon fiber monocoque can hold two people, and two racing seats with five-point harnesses are separated by a central section that runs over a fire extinguisher. Faux suede covers the seats and steering wheel, and the instrument panel is positioned on top of the long steering column as a tribute to the car's racing intent.
