With climate change, people talk about the "new normal", but what is normal anyway? Dr. Gammon discusses that as children, we discover how the world works and how people interact as we observe and experience them, but since our experiences are unique, our sense of normal is unique too. This can be seen in climate change, where the climate change that we each experience will be different partly because that change is taking place compared to our own unique normal or precious past. John Nielsen-Gammon is currently a Regents Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and also serves as the Texas State Climatologist. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving a Ph.D. He does research on various types of extreme weather from droughts to floods, as well as air pollution and computer modeling. As Texas State Climatologist, he helps the State of Texas make the best possible use of weather and climate information, through applied research, outreach, and service on state-level committees. He is also a fellow of the American Meteorological Society. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
