The explosive growth of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG offshoot has been well-chronicled over the years. There’s hardly a crevice or cranny in the new vehicle market the performance car builder doesn’t want to exploit to the max. But here’s one; there’s no E 63 S V8 coupe. Instead the six-cylinder mild hybrid E 53 4Matic+ is the top of the model tree. The question is, considering its about $175K plus on-roads, is there enough AMG here to justify the asking price?
You have a garage in your brain, right? You look at some vehicle or other and mentally park it where it belongs. Well, sorry, but the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ is stubbornly refusing to go where my brain is sending it.
Let’s see. It’s more expensive than the admirable Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupe V8, yet offers two less cylinders and significantly less power and torque.
