VW ID5 GTX driving REVIEW - the VW empire strikes back with the new EV SUV Coupé

The VW ID.5, the SUV-coupe derived from the VW ID.4, is now available in the European market. The ID.5 carline includes a hotter GTX variant with an all-wheel-drive layout and a sportier styling right from day one.

Design

The VW ID.5 differs from the ID.4 from behind the B-pillars with a lower roofline and a dramatically angled hatch for an aggressive stance and improved aerodynamics. Thanks to a curvier glasshouse and a flatter rear deck, the ID.5 has an unmistakable coupe-like appearance. The ID.5 sports a decklid spoiler that makes it sportier. The interior design of the coupe version of the ID.4 is the same.

The VW ID.5 GTX gets special styling bits similar to the ID.4 GTX. Three honeycomb elements on the outer ends of the bumper form the GTX variant’s LED DRLs and subtly convey its presence at the front. At the rear, instead of the model name badge, there’s a GTX badge on the trunk lid.

Specifications
Performance

The VW ID.5 comes in Pro, and Pro Performance trims, both exclusively in the RWD drivetrain layout. The ID.5 Pro uses a basic 128 kW (172 hp) motor and accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 10.4 seconds. The ID.5 gets a punchier, 150 kW (201 hp) motor that allows it to finish the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration quicker, in 8.4 seconds. The top speed of both ID.5 Pro and ID.5 Pro Performance is the same – 160 km/h (99 mph).

The ID.5 GTX sports two motors, one at the front and one at the rear, which guarantees better performance and traction. These motors produce a combined power of 220 kW (295 hp). The ID.5 GTX can speed up from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) way quicker, in just 6.2 seconds. That’s not all; it boasts a higher top speed of 180 km/h (111 mph), too.

Battery

Familiar to the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX is a standard 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The ID.5 Pro and ID.5 Pro Performance deliver the same WLTP range of 523 km (325 miles). The ID.5 GTX provides a slightly shorter WLTP range of 491 km (305 miles).

Charging

Customers will be able to charge the VW ID.5 and its GTX variant with a power of up to 11 kW at an AC charging station or wall box or up to 135 kW at a DC charging station. Charging with 135 kW for around 30 minutes allows adding 390 km (242 miles) of range in the ID.5 and 320 km (199 miles) in the ID.5 GTX.

The VW ID.5 GTX supports a higher peak charging power of 150 kW, and this means a quick 6-minute stop at a fast-charging station is enough to add 100 km (62 miles) to the driving range.

Volkswagen ID. 3.0 software

As Volkswagen announced on November 11, 2021, the VW ID.5 will come with Volkswagen ID. Software 3.0 that improves charging capacity and voice control among other features, and activates additional functions. The company released details of the new generation software on March 21, 2022.
