The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is usually a full-size luxury SUV manufactured by the German carmaker Mercedes-Benz since 2006. It can be a three-row, seven-passenger vehicle positioned over the GLE-Class inside lineup and is particularly the flagship with the Mercedes-Benz SUV line. The GLS shares a similar unibody architecture with all the GLE-Class. The vast majority of GLS-Class vehicles are assembled at Mercedes-Benz US International, Inc, in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama aside from a small number of early production 2007 model vehicles that have been manufactured in Germany. The first generation (X164) was manufactured between 2006 and 2012 and was replaced in 2012 with the new generation GL-Class (X166). From 2016, together with the release on the facelifted X166 second generation model, the GL-Class was renamed as Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class depending on the revised nomenclature adopted from the brand. Under built, SUVs utilize base name "GL", followed with the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy. The "G" is perfect for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle) and alludes the long-running G-Wagen. This is followed through the letter "L" that provides linkage with all the letter "S"—the GLS being the SUV similar to the S-Class.
