It might be due for replacement in 2023, but the Volkswagen Amarok is still one of the better utes on the market if a premium engine and presentable interior are your priorities. Today, Sam Young tests the 2022 Volkswagen Amarok 580TDI Highline for Chasing Cars, focussing on this vehicle’s off-road ability.

Priced at $63,490 in Highline trim, Is it still worth buying an Amarok now, or should you wait for the new Ford Ranger V6 diesel - or the next-generation Amarok that will share the T6.2 Ranger platform?

Notably, the 190kW (254 hp) 3.0L V6 used in the current Amarok will not be carried over. The 2023 Amarok will use Ford’s Lion V6 diesel engine.

The VW Amarok competes with the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton and other dual-cab utes.
