In this video we ask an important question. Are the new class of unibody luxury SUVs too soft to handle the most important task of actually being an SUV. Are they capable enough to handle the winter in harsh conditions such as Yellowstone.
This is a 2020 GLS 460 (2 months old). It was stuck in the snow. It easily slid into the snowbank. The wheels where spinning and even though it would lurch forward it would stay put and wouldn't get out of its own way.
I was not able to turn off the traction control in this SUV (not mine but I looked everywhere and I couldn't find a way to do this).
There was no locking differentials, there was no low range, there was no LSD, etc. Basically, there was no way to get this SUV out on its own power even though it didn't bottom out. I was able to raise it a tiny bit which didn't do anything.
With winter tires it probably would have been fine. However, Let's not forget the LX570 in this video had all seasons also. In fact, we took our winters off of the LX570 3 weeks ago. The LX570 has low range, has a locking center differential, has LSD, can get started in second gear, and has the ability to turn off the traction control which greatly helped here. Also our LX570 is more than 12 years old and is less 25K to purchase now, and has 125K miles on it. I am just surprised that the new SUVs do not come with any of the features that came on a 13 year old SUV.
Let us know what you think.
