Late in 2021 we tested the GLE63s Coupe version of the super-sports SUV from Mercedes-Benz. At the time I made numerous references to the manic performance potential of the vehicle.

This time we had the more standard version of the SUV. Raised roofline at the rear, slightly more headroom and boot space but identical under the skin in every other respect.

The biturbo V8 engine blasts out 450kW and 850Nm to all 4 wheels through the 9 speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission. All the available multi-modes from Comfort to Race adjust the performance and shifting points of the transmission.

Whether it was state of mind or anything else, the standard GLE felt less manic and over the top than the Coupe version. The exceptional performance, extreme luxury and total safety package are all present. It remains a car that can be anything you want at the twist of a knob.

For the executive looking for a family SUV that really does supply everything in one package, this truly fits the bill.

Currently priced at R2 .9 million including a 5 year/ 100 000km maintenance plan.
