From launch, the VW Golf R has been the grown-up hot hatch to beat: fast, capable and classy, it's offered a package that's very hard to argue with.

Mercedes-AMG believes it's made something better, though, with the new A35. It boasts near identical power, performance and weight figures, plus the jazzy new A-Class interior, but can it be a better hot hatch than the Golf? Dan Prosser heads to Wales to find out.
