Mercedes-Benz and Chinese battery manufacturer CATL today announced a “major” partnership to “create cutting-edge battery technology” and supply batteries for the upcoming EQS electric car, which is expected to have 400 miles of range per single charge.

CATL is the largest electric car battery producer in China and closely works with Tesla. In fact, Tesla will have CATL batteries running in its made-in-China electric vehicles. Now, CATL is forming another, major partnership with Mercedes-Benz to supply batteries to its EQS sedan, which is expected to be a major competitor to most electric cars with 400 miles of range per single charge.

Mercedes-Benz and CATL call their partnerships as “the next stage of their strategic partnership and will create cutting-edge battery technology in support of the high-volume electrification of the Mercedes-Benz model portfolio.”

Markus Schäfer, the member of the board of management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG responsible for Daimler Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars COO, commented on the announcement:

We intend to lead in battery technologies, so we are now combining our own research and development expertise with bold partners. We will integrate cutting-edge battery systems to create luxury cars with outstanding range, charging speed, safety, and sustainability. Working with CATL will see us accelerate our transformation toward carbon-neutrality. CATL will be a major supplier securing capacity for the next generations of our EQ products in the years to come.

Mercedes CATL deal has two very interesting characteristics.

The two most interesting parts of the deal are that Mercedes-Benz says it plans to use CATL’s cell-to-pack (CTP) design and that CATL is going to supply battery cells for Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming EQS electric sedan.

Cell-to-pack design eliminates conventional modules and integrates the cells directly into the battery pack.
