The Mercedes-Benz G-Class already looks tough on the outside, and has for four decades, but how does the all-new version fare in European New Car Assessment Program's (Euro NCAP) round of crash tests? The first-gen model, which had been on sale since 1979, gained Stuttgart's safety tech pretty late in the 1990s, when the military-grade 4x4 was transformed into a plush runabout for those who could afford it, complete with a convertible version. The old G-Class, codenamed W463, may have had sheer mass and metal on its side, but it took some getting used to, including its high center of gravity.

The new G-Class, which debuted just last year, is a different story and was engineered with the latest safety tech in mind from the very start, instead of being retrofitted into a decades-old design. Crash tests themselves have changed significantly since the original model's debut, and today's testing technology can tell us a lot about a vehicle's behavior in different types of impacts.

Just in case you needed more proof the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the toughest SUVs on the planet, Euro NCAP has put the gargantuan German SUV through a series of crash tests to see how it would perform in the event of an accident. Thankfully, you can be assured you’ll be well-protected, as NCAP awarded the new-generation G-Wagon a prestigious five-star safety rating.

The seven-seat SUV scored 90 % for adult occupant protection, despite some "weak" and "marginal" scores for upper body protection in some tests. Child occupant protection scored 83 percent, while also managing 78 % for vulnerable road-user protection and 72 % for its standard safety assistance technology. Surprisingly, the boxy G-Class was awarded a commendable 78 % score for pedestrian protection.
