The CX-3 is technically the smallest SUV in Mazda's lineup, and it shares space in the subcompact SUV segment with the slightly larger and only slightly more expensive CX-30. But its proximity to the CX-30 doesn't render the CX-3 entirely obsolete. Its upscale cabin, fun-to-drive nature, and cheeky exterior styling keeps it in the hunt among other small crossovers. The CX-3 could also be called the SUV for car lovers, as its seating height, while slightly higher than the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback, is still quite carlike, and its eager chassis comes alive on a twisty road. A 146-hp four-cylinder engine provides the motivation, but it's not particularly refined and all-wheel drive costs extra. Cargo and passenger space are limited, too, which could turn off some buyers, but those folks could easily gravitate to the more modern and more spacious CX-30 without dipping too much further into their wallets.

What's New for 2021?

Mazda has made no changes to its smallest SUV for 2021, as the CX-3 enters the new model year exactly as it was in 2020.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The CX-3's well-built and impressively detailed cabin feels upscale, and its comfortable and straightforward driving position makes it easy to settle in for a drive. Rear-passenger space is limited, though, which reduces its practicality as a people hauler. Fans of simplicity will appreciate the cabin. Mazda has chosen textured plastics, soft leather, and bright chrome detailing. The climate system's three large rotary knobs are among the few controls on the dashboard. As with its passenger space, the CX-3 is stingy when it comes to cargo room. In both of our storage tests, it fell at or near the bottom of the pack. Behind its back seat, we managed to fit three of our carry-on suitcases, and it maxed out at 12 with the rear seats folded. For comparison's sake, the similarly sized Mazda 3 hatchback accommodated five carry-ons behind its back seat and 15 with the seat stowed.
