The launch of a brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a special occasion, and once that generally happens only once a decade. Historically regarded as the benchmark by which all other cars are measured, the S-Class has faced new threats in recent years – both from traditional rivals, and new electrified alternatives. In fact, Mercedes-Benz are splitting their flagship saloon into the traditional combustion S-Class seen here, and the new all-electric EQS that will be revealed next month.

Is the S-Class still the car you buy when you’ve truly made it? And among the new S-Class range, is the S450 six-cylinder with 48v hybrid boost the version to go for? Or is a Tesla Model S, Audi A8 or BMW 7 Series a better alternative?
