I talk about how to remove the steering wheel, disconnect and replace the clock spring on a car.
The clock spring is responsible for transmitting the electronic signals from the rotating steering wheel (such as steering wheel audio control, horn, airbag, cruise control, etc.) to the vehicle.
The clock spring consists of a long ribbon cable twisted into a spiral. Its length allows it to turn about 5 turns before the wire gets taut. The case is simply made of plastic with strong connections at both ends for the airbag and accessories.
Often an airbag indicator on the dashboard or a missing steering wheel controls (horn, audio controls, etc.) can be attributed to a faulty clock spring. Usually, a thin ribbon cable breaks at some point and needs to be replaced or patched.
The clock spring is located behind the steering wheel. Be careful when handling the airbag as it is explosive. Disconnect the battery and allow the system to discharge for 15 minutes or remove the fuse before removing the airbag.
