The performance of the eight-cylinder models in the series was surpassed again by the E 60 AMG with 280 kW, which, like those, was only available as a sedan. It was offered as a tuning version of the E 500 through Mercedes-Benz dealers. A 500 that rolled off the assembly line as standard was converted by AMG and, in addition to the larger machine, which was also installed in the SL, the chassis was modified in order to do justice to the additional power. Only 147 (or 148) examples of the 6 liter version were built.
